Knowing What to Expect

Preparing for surgery can feel overwhelming or scary if you don’t know what to expect. You may have some unanswered questions and worries that make you feel this way. Knowing what to expect will help you feel less nervous and more in control.

The CardioMEMS HF System makes it possible for doctors to closely monitor patients with heart failure without their leaving home. A small sensor is implanted in your pulmonary artery; the sensor measures and records your pulmonary artery pressure, and that information is transmitted to your cardiologist. Changes in these readings can indicate worsening heart failure (increased pressure in the lungs suggests the heart’s pumping is becoming less effective). With that early alert, your care team can intervene by adjusting your medications or making other treatment changes even before you experience new or worsening symptoms.

The system consists of the paper clip–sized sensor, which takes daily readings, and a wireless transmitter that you use to send the readings to your treatment team.
